Job Description:

Job Title: Controller

Location: Shawnee, Kansas

Company: Max Rieke & Brothers, Inc.

About Us:

Max Rieke & Brothers, Inc. is a premier heavy civil construction company based in Shawnee, Kansas. With a decades-long legacy of delivering critical infrastructure projects, we pride ourselves on technical expertise, integrity, and a fleet-heavy operational model. We are seeking a sophisticated Controller who understands the unique financial landscape of heavy-highway and utility construction to oversee our financial operations and support our continued growth.

Position Overview:

The Controller will manage all financial aspects of our heavy civil operations. This role goes beyond general accounting, requiring a deep understanding of unit-price contracting, equipment cost recovery, and the Percentage of Completion (POC) method. You will be responsible for managing complex job costing, KDOT and MoDOT compliance, and the integration of field-to-office data. The Controller acts as a strategic partner to the executive team and works closely with our outside CPA firm. Direct experience with Foundation accounting software and the HCSS suite (HeavyJob/HeavyBid) is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger management for multi-million dollar heavy civil projects.
  • Manage the work-in-progress (WIP) reporting process, providing accurate analysis of over/under billings and revenue recognition.
  • Direct project controls for unit-price and lump-sum contracts, including AIA billings, T&M tracking, and RFC/change order management.
  • Ensure strict compliance with KDOT and MoDOT regulations, including Davis-Bacon/Certified Payroll requirements and EEO reporting.
  • Monitor heavy equipment life-cycles, calculating internal rental rates and analyzing fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and depreciation to optimize fleet ROI.
  • Administer the lien waiver process, bonding capacity, insurance renewals, and certificates of insurance for vendors and subcontractors.
  • Optimize ERP and accounting software integrations (Foundation and HCSS) to ensure seamless data flow between project sites and the home office.
  • Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for financial reporting and administrative workflows to streamline business processes.
  • Coordinate the preparation of all required tax filings and year-end financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and the executive team to provide data-driven financial insights for bidding, budgeting, and strategic planning.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA designation is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within the heavy civil or highway construction industry.
  • Expertise in construction-specific financial reporting, including POC accounting and job cost analysis.
  • Proven proficiency in Foundation accounting software and HCSS (HeavyJob/HeavyBid) is highly desired.
  • Strong knowledge of KDOT/MoDOT compliance and public works contracting requirements.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable operational insights.
  • A flexible leader who thrives in a diverse, fast-paced construction environment.

Benefits:

Max Rieke & Brothers, Inc. offers a competitive salary and a collaborative, professional work culture. Our comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan with Profit Sharing
  • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) package
